I was recently booked to deliver some training at home with Katrina on her espresso machine – a Sage Barista Express. There has been a lot of hype and excitement about Sage’s other machine, The Dual Boiler, as it is competing with machines such as the Expobar Office Leva Dual Boiler and Rocket R58.
The Barista Express is a much simpler machine and a great option for a beginner or for someone who doesn’t make very many drinks per day and doesn’t require a large boiler for lots of milk drinks etc. It has a built-in grinder which is fully adjustable and uses conical burrs and is very easy to set up. A dose control dial on the front panel decides how much coffee it dispenses. The group head is run by two programmable dose buttons for single and double espresso shots. This machine is designed for ease of use and repeatability. This machine uses a thermocoil as opposed to a boiler for heating water, and as such won’t win any races when steaming milk, but the quality of the microfoam and espresso is great.
Highly recommended if looking for an affordable all-in-one unit.
Here’s the feedback that Katrina gave after the session:
“Spent a very enjoyable morning learning everything from buying quality beans to performing some latte art, Michael explained and demonstrated everything that my machine does, we perfected the grind and produced some good espresso, after that Michael demonstrated some latte art which he made look so easy , so another 3 pints of milk later I perfected some rather unique designs. Would highly recommend that anyone spending money on a good machine should invest in some good training. Thank you Michael for your time.”
